In its 120th year, the Tennyson Center for Children in Denver stands as a beacon of hope for thousands of young individuals facing severe trauma. The center has witnessed an increasing severity in the mental and behavioral health challenges of the children it serves. Despite these growing needs, the Tennyson Center remains committed to making a difference. Last year alone, nearly 70% of participants in the center’s programs experienced significant improvements in their trauma-related symptoms. Through both residential and community-based services, the center offers comprehensive support to over 3,000 children annually across 12 counties, providing them with the tools they need to heal and thrive.
Healing Hearts and Minds in Colorado's Capital
In the heart of Denver, amidst the vibrant streets of Colorado's capital, lies the Tennyson Center for Children, an institution dedicated to supporting traumatized youth since 1904. As the center celebrates its 120th anniversary, its mission remains more critical than ever. President and CEO Mindy Watrous highlights the escalating complexity of the mental health issues faced by today's children. “We are seeing kids with more severe trauma symptoms than ever before,” she notes. However, the center's resilience shines through, as evidenced by the remarkable progress made by many of its young clients.
Former patient Taz Dowd, now 23, shares her journey from despair to empowerment. Initially admitted to the center as a teenager following a mental health crisis, Dowd found solace and guidance at Tennyson. “Before Tennyson, my life felt hopeless,” she recalls. “But the center helped me find a path forward, transforming my outlook on life.” Dowd emphasizes the importance of the center’s holistic approach, which includes therapeutic excursions and family-focused interventions. These experiences allowed her to regain control over her emotions and rebuild meaningful relationships.
The Tennyson Center offers a range of services, from on-site educational programs to home-based therapy, ensuring that each child receives personalized care. The center’s relatively new residential program, opened in September 2023, provides a safe haven for up to 16 children who cannot live in traditional family settings. Watrous underscores the dedication of the staff, who work tirelessly to create an atmosphere of compassion and positivity. “Our team is committed to making a difference every single day,” she says.
A Community Built on Support and Hope
The success of the Tennyson Center for Children is not just a testament to its staff but also to the unwavering support of the community. Over one-third of the center’s $15 million annual budget comes from donations and fundraising efforts. This reliance on community generosity underscores the vital role that collective action plays in sustaining such essential services. As Watrous points out, “Community support is absolutely integral to what we do.” The center’s legacy of healing and hope continues to grow, thanks to the contributions of countless supporters who believe in the power of compassion and change.
